Humble Beginnings
Wongs Jewellers, a family-run business in Liverpool, has a rich history spanning over six decades. It all began in the early 1960s when Brian Wong, at the age of 15, embarked on a goldsmith apprenticeship in Liverpool City Centre, leveraging his woodworking skills to transition into fine jewellery making.
Learning the Craft
Brian trained on Richmond Street, just 50 yards from Wongs’ current location. He worked alongside David M Robinson and eventually became Head Goldsmith. But Brian had bigger dreams.

A New Venture
Ambition finally got the better of him and in April 1979, Brian opened his first workshop in an office block at 26th North John Street.
"I will never forget that day, the hum of the machinery, the scent of the polishing compound, the tap of the hammer, all magic to the eyes and ears of a young boy." - Brian
A Small move
After 5 succesful years, the need for expansion grew, this took Brian and his small team to The first floor of 31 Mathew Street, slowly creeping closer to our current premises.

Our first retail space
As time moved on, the Wongs name grew and grew, it was then that the need for a dedicated retail space became a priority.
This lead us to open our first true retail shop, located on the ground floor of 5 Rainford Square. A quaint shop with tonnes of character!
A Family Tradition
Three decades later, Brian’s son, Peter Wong, followed in his fathers footsteps. At 16, he joined the family business, learning the craft under his father’s guidance.
"I joined straight from school. Learning the basics, making the tea, sweeping the floor... apprentice’s tasks. I was fortunate to have a Master Craftsman as my tutor."

The Launch of Wongs as we know it
Wongs moves into its current premises on corner of Whitechapel - The flagship store was previously home to Hessy's, the famous guitar shop where The Beatles legend, Sir Paul McCartney bought his first guitar.
Raising money for a good cause
Over several years, Wongs proudly raised an incredible £120,000 for Alder Hey Children's Hospital through events, balls and a jewellery collection made for Alder Hey. This charity holds a deep personal connection to the Wongs family, and as a vital part of Liverpool’s community, it is an honour to continuously support such a meaningful cause.

The start of our award winning streak
Peter Wong was honoured with Business Owner of the Year by the prestigious Retail Jeweller and CMJ. Wongs has continued its winning streak, earning numerous accolades over the years, including Best Place to Work and Retailer of the Year - awards we’ve proudly won consecutively.
A legacy of excellence
Now in his late 70s, Brian continues to share his expertise by mentoring young goldsmiths and working on customers’ most treasured jewellery. His dedication to craftsmanship and excellence remains the foundation of Wongs Jewellers, where our values of passion, precision, and integrity guide everything we do.
His motto still inspires us today: ‘Do a job so no one can do it better.’"
