Any item made of precious metal (such as gold, platinum, or silver) that weighs above a certain threshold must be hallmarked by an independent Assay Office to legally verify its metal content. This requirement isn’t just about compliance - it’s about protecting customers, ensuring transparency, and upholding the heritage and integrity of British jewellery.

When you purchase an engagement ring or any precious metal piece from Wongs, you’re not just receiving a beautifully crafted item - you’re receiving a promise of authenticity. Every eligible piece we sell is independently tested and hallmarked by one of the four official UK Assay Offices - based in London, Birmingham, Sheffield, or Edinburgh - some of the most trusted institutions in the industry with centuries of expertise.

Each hallmark is a small but mighty mark, made up of a series of symbols that confirm the item’s authenticity and specifications. These marks typically include:

• The Sponsor's Mark – identifying the maker or sponsor of the piece. In our case, this includes the prestigious Wongs Jewellers logo, a sign of our commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

• The Standard Mark – indicating the precious metal type and fineness (e.g., 750 for 18ct gold, 950 for platinum or 925 for Silver).

• The Assay Office Mark – representing the specific Assay Office that tested and marked the piece (such as an anchor for Birmingham or a leopard’s head for London).

• The Date Letter – a letter corresponding to the year the item was hallmarked.
